Western Civilization: Lesson 175

What can we say about the condition of the Catholic Church on the eve of the Protestant Reformation? It was over exaggerating on the saints and there was much cruelty but the Popes tried to fight against the cruelty of executing people but there was such a wide spread of this issue that it couldn’t be stopped. The workers of the church had so much want for a worldly richness that they didn’t care about their spiritual health; they were hungry for money that they would gamble and drink.

Discuss the three key developments in the process of political centralization in Spain.

  1. The marriage of Aragon and Castile in 1469 and ten years later in 1479 the two crowns are united and the establishment of a new strong government takes place.
  2. The conquest of Granada brings the reconquista to an end. Ferdinand and Isabella were determined to revive the reconquista. The Granada was the last Moorish outpost in Spain.
  3. The Spanish Inquisition was the concern over Jews and Muslims whose conversions to Catholicism did not appear sincere. Rulers believed religious uniformity would make Spain easier to rule and greater power.
